What can we do to get Drupal to handle multimedia files better ?

on Sun, 2011-07-31 11:15

More than always, a great support for multimedia files is what people want. Who cares about hosting videos or images when YouTube and Flickr do that for you ? Well, some people do and we have to allow them to deal with that process as smoothly as possible. But mostly, companies do, and they want it bad. With SaaS applications coming in every part of modern businesses, Drupal might not only be seen as a great CMS but also as the perfect tool to build a SaaS application. And do you know what's great with SaaS applications ? Like YouTube or Flickr, you want them to handle your assets without headaches. Unfortunately we're not there yet and there's work to do.

Wordpress is a great source of inspiration. Their multimedia buttons and WYSIWYG toolbar are truly amazing and newbs understand how things are working within minutes.

Look at their multimedia browser...

Now look at the one from the Media module...ok you get it. If we don't find the UI inspiration ourselves, let's at least build awesome features.

Next, let's take a look at what Joomla! does...

Ugly huh ? But there's a kick-ass directory support and companies neeeeed that ! IMCE and CKFinder are simply not the solution. Give a social business software every possible tool to create articles, blog entries or whatever content type business owners need, the end users will anyway attach thousands of PDF and Microsoft Office documents overloading the database and making the one-directory only architecture cough in no time.

Wanna help with all this ? Contribute to the following modules and make them even more awesome !

Support Git to grow your business

on Mon, 2011-07-25 11:07

I'm amazed by the passion Git is able to convey. When the evaluation discussion for how to move Drupal.org off of CVS took place, this was really far from easy to guess. Look at the Git discussion or the dramatic spike in number of committers post-git migration. Pretty impressive, huh ? The Drupal.org Git Team made a terrific job. Releasing both Git and Drupal 7 almost at the same time also made a big difference in people's mind leaving GitHub to commit back to d.o again.

At Acquia we've been using Subversion (SVN) from the early days. Many customers have been asking for us to support Git and we finally launched a private beta a few weeks ago. Again, there were tons of customers willing to be part of it and now that we've released a "semi" public beta that's even more noticeable. Behind all this there's quite an amazing piece of engineering allowing Dev Cloud customers to easily switch from Subversion to Git at will and that's just great. Managed Cloud will probably be next and there are still great things to build around it.

So, you want to grow your business and don't know where to start ? Support Git and instantly you'll have passionate people enjoying every part of it. CVS was painful, SVN was "ok". Git, Bazaar and Mercurial are the next gen Version Control Systems. Git just happens to be the most popular and you don't want to miss the train.

What's great with Twitter is when it goes viral in a really unexpected manner. Who began with the #drupalfilms hastag ? Who cares ? A few of them are just cracking me up.

And we thought we were nerds !
